In the fall, it is important to properly winterize the pool to minimize work in the spring. Drain the water below the jets and remove water from the piping to prevent it from freezing. Treat the water with enough pool chemicals to ensure it does not turn green.

Winterizing an above-ground pool

To prepare your pool for winter, first, lower the water level below the jets. Then disconnect the pool hoses and drain the water from them. Store the hoses in a garage or another dry place.

Install plugs for the jets. Disassemble the sand filter (drain plug at the bottom of the sand tank) and allow the water to drain from the filter. Set the multi-port valve to the mid-position, lifting the handle to allow all the water to drain from the head without removing the valve.

Adjust the pH in the pool to 7. Add chlorine shock, a standard dose of 90g per 10m³ of water. Keep in mind that the pool now contains about half of its water, so use half the normal dose of chlorine.

Finally, add the pool winterizing agent. The standard dose is 500ml per 10m³. The pool should be winterized when the outside temperature is around 10°C.

You can place expansion floats on the surface of the water. In extreme cases, you can also use PET bottles filled with sand.

You can cover the pool with a tarp or leave it uncovered. During the winter, check whether the water has turned green, and if necessary, add chlorine shock (e.g., in January or February).

Winterizing an in-ground pool

For an in-ground pool, the winterizing process has a few differences. As with an above-ground pool, lower the water below the jets. To remove water from the piping, the pipes must be sloped, or use a vacuum or blower to blow the water out of the pipes. Be careful, as this is the most important part of winterizing; if you neglect it, the pipes could crack due to freezing!

Then proceed similarly:

Install plugs for the jets. Disassemble the sand filter (drain plug at the bottom of the sand tank) and allow the water to drain from the filter. Set the multi-port valve to the mid-position, lifting the handle to drain all the water without needing to remove the valve.

Adjust the pH in the pool to 7. Add chlorine shock, a standard dose of 90g per 10m³ of water. Since the pool now has about half its water, use half the normal dose of chlorine.

Finally, add the winterizing solution. The standard dose is 500ml per 10m³. Winterize the pool when the outside temperature is around 10°C.

You can cover the pool with a tarp or leave it uncovered. During the winter, check whether the water has turned green, and if necessary, add chlorine shock (e.g., in January or February).

This is how we winterize in-ground pools from any manufacturer (Poolservis, Albixon, Mountfield) and of any type – vinyl, fiberglass, plastic, ceramic.

You can place expansion floats on the surface of the water. In extreme cases, you can also use PET bottles filled with sand.
